MG LEGACY

Tracing its history back to 1924, MG is the iconic British motoring brand, famous for building sporty and exciting cars which are always fun to drive. From the original MG 14/28 Super Sports car, designed by the legendary Cecil Kimber, to the all-electric MG ZS EV of today, MG has always been innovative, always been radical and always been fun!

Today, MG is the fastest growing car brand in the world, fielding a product range from hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs. Designed in Marylebone, London, and manufactured in state-of-the-art factories in several countries, today’s MGs are practical, spacious, packed with technology and perfect for modern life.

Morris Garages was founded

The story of MG began when Cecil Kimber joined Morris Cars in 1921. He later became the General Manager in 1922 and started producing his own tuned versions of Morris cars to boost sales.These cars took the name from the place they were sold, the Morris Garage. An icon was born with the first MG 14/28 based upon the Morris Oxford followed by the famous “Old Number One” which Kimber himself guilt to compete in the 1925 Lands End Trial. The Gold Medal Kimber won was the birth of MG’s sporting pedigree.

The Move to Abingdon

With the growing popularity of the company, it soon outgrew its original facilities and eventually moved to a town that became synonymous with the marque, Abingdon on Thames. Abingdon played host to MG’s production for the next fifty years. Some amazing headlines were made in this time such as the MG EX120 “The Magic Midget” setting the land speed record and the birth of “MGLive!”, the first Silverstone International Race Meeting in 1933.

For many it is the most beautiful car to boast the MG octagon, the MGA arrived in 1955. Over 100,000 MGAs were produced with almost 95,000 exported from the UK which are truly impressive numbers for its era. The MGA was powered by a 1500cc engine which was later upgraded to 1600cc in 1959, accompanied by a Twin-cam model, producing 106bhp.

The MGB sports car was the first of its kind, affordable sports car for thousands of passionate and loyal MGA customers, who appreciated the innovation it brought with it. A more rigid Monocoque construction was the major improved technical feature, which replaced the old style body on frame construction of MG. The MGB retained the MGA’s B-Series four-cylinder engine. It was undoubtedly a massive shift for MG and MGB became a synonym for the brand.

Era of MG Roadsters

In the 90s the MG Car Club returned to its home and opened headquarters in Abington which was named the “The Kimber House”. The MGF was the first MG sports car since the 80s and it was received like a star, to the point that it became the best seller across the world. After that the world saw the revival on MG’s motor sport heritage at the British Touring Car Championships.

For the first time in MG history, 3 new body styles have been introduced in the hatchback, sedan and compact SUV categories. MG is focusing more on the SUV models with the introduction of MG HS and MG ZS, a contemporary design reflecting the brand vision of the MG’ future innovative models.
